Descripción larga
Of the old construction only a spandrel of the gallery of the second floor is conserved that is carved with the shield of this family and that can be seen in the façade. It can be also highlighted the primitive cellars.
The building is currently being restored to be used as the headquarters of the Muñoz Sola Museum of Modern Art.
This building has its origins in medieval times and belonged to a family of the nobility of Tudela, the Veráiz, who since the Middle Ages held various positions in the Court of Navarra and in the administrative area of de Tudela.
Today it has been extensively renovated and only retains its façade and vestiges of a Gothic lobed arcade. Its spandrel is decorated with winged dragons that serve as a frame for a Gothic stone shield inscribed in a lobed oculus. This coat of arms is the oldest of those preserved in the city of Tudela. Inside the palace is divided into four quarters with a trefoil cross in the first and fourth quarters and a rake in the second and third quarters. The shield is framed by a border of passing lions.
From this primitive period are also preserved two ashlar cellars that are used as workshop and course rooms of the Muñoz Sola Museum of Modern Art, of which it is the headquarters. In 1768 Domingo Veráiz Magallón commissioned the renovation of the building to Felipe Domenech and Manuel Barrera, a blacksmith. During this Baroque period the palace was profoundly remodeled, as can be seen in the classicist rhythm of the windows on the façade and the simple decoration of the sills that support the balconies.
The interior of the Museum is distributed as follows: the aforementioned cellar, the first floor where the service area is located, and two upper floors where the exhibition rooms for the permanent collection of 19th century paintings as well as the temporary exhibitions that are programmed annually are located.
This museum houses a varied collection of 19th century French painting assembled by the Tudela painter César Muñoz Sola (1921-2000). It consists of a rich collection of portraits, still lives, landscapes and genre scenes with examples of naturalist and romantic, impressionist and symbolist painting, with works by Girodet de Roucy, Carolus Duran, Goupil, Isabey or L'Hermitte, among others, or the Spanish José Villegas or López Mezquita.
